Spirit of Wonder

Read Acts 2:1-4, 36-41.

October marks the end of an exciting stage in our family’s life. We have had the joy of being parents of two children under the age of two. Life with two active boys under two years old is a constant adventure. Each day brings new and wonderful delights. There are so many things that they discover, from how one’s feet taste to petting a horse for the first time. Their joy is contagious. They are in a state of constant wonder and awe. Each day is a new day, a new experience, a new adventure!

Life with God is a constant adventure. Our joy is to be contagious while we stand in wonder at the faithfulness of our God. In weeks inundated with the news of continued school violence in our country and the war in Iraq, it can be hard to see God’s faithfulness. It can be challenging to stand in awe of God’s power when we are weighed down by bad news and overwhelming sadness. It may be difficult to enjoy God’s presence when the world seems troubled. Yet we can find hope amidst trials if we search for God.

Our church has been studying the miracle of Pentecost. We are learning the awe and wonder the first church experienced when the Spirit came down like tongues of fire and spread through them like a rushing wind. The first church could have been weighed down by the bad news all around.
• Their future was uncertain.
• They were few in number.
• Jesus had just left them.
• Persecution was sure to come.
Instead of being overwhelmed by bad news, they were invigorated by the Holy Spirit. Each day was an adventure as they witnessed the power of God at work in them and through them. Thousands were added to their number as they listened to the disciples’ teachings and witnessed miracles.

God offers us that power as well. That same Spirit is waiting to blow into our lives and stir things up as it did in the early church. The Spirit can do more than we can think or even imagine. The Spirit desires individuals and churches that are ready to go anywhere God leads. We can embark on an adventure of faith far greater than we could’ve imagined on our own. May we experience the joy and power of the Spirit to make each day a new opportunity to serve Christ.

Prayer: Ever surprising God, refresh our lives with the presence of your Spirit, making each day a new adventure in your world. Restore to us the joy of children experiencing your creation. Blow through our lives and stir up new opportunities to serve you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
