Will They Tell the Stories?
“. . .in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to
everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have” (1 Peter 3:15).
When fourteen-year-old Tatum O’Neal was making the film International Velvet, a school inspector came to make sure that she was not falling behind in her school studies. Noting that her math was not very good, he asked whether that bothered her. The child star was unconcerned. She replied, “Oh, no, I’ll have an accountant.”
Many educators are afraid, given our modern technological society with all its computers and sophisticated pocket calculators, that young people are going to lose the mental abilities and skills with which to do math. (Let me say to these educators, you must not have read the instructions for some of these gadgets, nor have you ever worked with one.)
As a Christian educator, I am concerned, however, that young people are going to lose the ability to share their faith in God’s divine work in the Christ because they are placing too much emphasis on technology and science.
I do not fear that science or technology will destroy the stories of our faith that we live by or replace them with factual data. Human faith in God is rarely based on facts in the final analysis.
What I fear, however, is that technology and its ease will destroy the initiative for sharing the stories of faith by one person with another. I fear that the stories of God’s saving work in Christ will be relegated to videos, movies, the Bible on PDAs, or some of the junk on the internet.
The power and the relevancy of God’s work in Jesus Christ is first and foremost a personal experience of one person’s faith in the presence of another person’s need. Tell someone your story of faith this week, and make sure your kids and grandkids hear and can tell the stories of faith in God.
Prayer: Gracious God, give me courage to tell the story of Your work in my life. While you prepare me to do the telling, prepare someone to hear it and respond to Your grace. Amen.
