Why Does a Unicorn Have Only One Horn?

Read Isaiah 55:8-9.

During my 20 years in the Navy, I served a two-year tour in Washington D.C. at the Washington Navy Yard. In the building where I worked was a four-star admiral by the name of Hyman G. Rickover. In case you don’t know who he was, he was known as the “Father of the Nuclear Navy” and served 63 years on active duty in the U.S. Navy.

One of Admiral Rickover’s primary jobs was to interview all naval officers who wanted to enter the Navy’s nuclear program. A friend of mine who had worked for Admiral Rickover for several years told me how these interviews went. When you walked into the Admiral’s office for an interview, he had a four-legged metal chair sitting in front of his desk. The two front legs had been cut shorter then the two back legs so that the chair sat at a slant. When you sat down, if you did not sit up absolutely straight and slouched just a little bit, you would slide to the floor. After the interview had gone on for about 25 minutes, Admiral Rickover would ask the final question: “Why does a unicorn have only one horn?”

There are times in our lives when we become upset and impatient for an answer from God. When we wait and wait and wait for that answer, if we aren’t careful, doubt and unbelief can step in and take over. If we don’t sit up straight and trust in God’s providence, our faith will slip and fall to the floor.

According to Isaiah 55:8-9, God’s ways and thoughts are not the same as ours. God’s thoughts and ways exceed our human imagination. We are limited in our comprehension to all that God is doing in our lives.

Trying to understand and explain all of God’s ways and attempting to come up with the answers to all the “why” questions is like trying to answer the question, “Why does a unicorn have only one horn?”

In the same way Admiral Rickover was testing those naval officers, perhaps God is testing us today to see how we will respond. We must always trust in God’s providence and obey God even if we do not understand God’s ways.

Prayer: Loving Father, forgive us for those times we become impatient for an answer from you. Help us to strengthen our faith in order to totally trust You even when we may not know what’s going on. We know You are in control of everything and You have a plan. Give us the patience of Your loving Son, Jesus. May we continue to trust You with all our hearts. In the loving name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.
