The Hills Were Alive
Read: Psalm 121
The Casper hills were alive this summer with the voices of children and adults at Camp WYOBA. But the hills were also alive with an incredible fire in Jackson Canyon which threatened the camp’s existence. Several things came to mind about all of this as I started to write this devotional.
My first thought was of the many years of camping that have taken place at WYOBA and all the lives that have been challenged in that beautiful place—a rustic camp set in the middle of a small valley. Children of all ages have come and met their Lord through the ministering of a committed staff and their peers. I don’t know the number of people who have made the decision to go into some kind of Christian ministry as a result of being challenged at WYOBA. For the last 20 years I have spent a week of the summer at Junior High Camp, meeting and working with some of the brightest and best of our young people. What an awesome way to spend the summer! God brings them to camp, and we get the chance to share our love of God with them in a setting apart from the cares and interruptions of the world.
The second thought was of the fears I had when the Jackson Canyon fire started, and we weren’t allowed to go on the mountain to check anything. I had to trust that God was taking care of this wonderful avenue of ministry. God did, and all is well.
Psalm 121 says, “I lift up my eyes to the hills—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip—he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.” Whether it is the camping season and the touch on young lives or the physical property being safe, our God is in charge and will not leave us or forsake us; indeed, God “neither slumbers nor sleeps.”
Prayer: I praise you, Father, for your love, for watching over your children and the places of special ministry, for the peace and comfort you give every day. You are good. . . all the time, and I thank you! Amen.
