A Passion for Worship
Read: Psalm 138:1-2
In his new book titled, Don’t Waste Your Life, pastor and writer John Piper shares the purpose for living. We are born to bring glory to God, to live for a godly life, and be freed from the bondage of sin. Piper writes that a wasted life is a life without passion. What are you passionate about?
My passion is to worship our Lord and King. I am still trying to understand worship. I know worship is more than singing songs together or attending a service. It is certainly more than following along in the worship folder and participating as the leader suggests.
Worship involves time; in fact, we can worship 24/7. Each message or Bible study I prepare is an act of worship. Every note I pen or card that I sign is a worship response knowing that the person who receives it might encounter the holiness of the moment.
Worship is daring to draw near to God. Phil Keaggy, a Christian artist senses his greatest times of worship to be when he is on stage doing his job. In an interview with Worship Leader magazine (July/August 2006 issue), he said he tries to help people connect with God during his concerts. “And that is what worship is,” says Keaggy, “loving God, thanking God in the moment, and expressing it with what you have at that time—with the voice you have or the tools you have in your hands. That’s where I am. And it’s not like I get on stage, plug in and boom, I’m worshiping. I’m basically doing my job, and then somehow at, at some point, I get the sense that it is going up to God. It’s very intimate. And as a musician, I feel those moments are my worship.”*
Have you thought about your work being worship? Worship isn’t something we turn on and off. Instead, worship is part of life’s daily rhythm. If we aren’t worshiping God on Monday morning and all through the week, perhaps we aren’t truly worshiping on Sunday.

Prayer: In life’s daily rhythm, I see You, O God. Thank You for entering my life and giving me work to do. Help me to worship with all I am and all I have. May my worship and my work be pleasing in Your sight. Amen.
