An Exciting Harvest

Read John 1:35-42; 4:35-36.

October is a month for harvesting. While I understand that most of us are not farmers and that we get what we need at the grocery store all year round, we are still aware of the harvest season. I had a great blessing in my personal harvest this year.

Earlier this month I harvested my one and only pumpkin for the year. I had about 100 feet of vine and countless blossoms, but it only produced one fruit.

As the family gathered around, I lifted the pumpkin onto the scale for the official weigh in. I knew I had a big one, but because I could lift it myself, I knew it wasn’t overly heavy. Our son, Seth, looked closely at the scales. Eighty pounds was the official weight. It has good color and shape.

How exciting to be the grower of such a masterpiece. Sure—there are bigger and better pumpkins out there, but I had a part in growing this one.

I wonder if this is how Andrew felt after Jesus called Peter and him to becomes disciples. Andrew, a seeker and follower of John the Baptist, was introduced to Jesus, the “lamb of God.” After encountering Jesus, the first thing Andrew did was to find Peter, his brother, and say to him, “We have found the Messiah.” Then Andrew brought Peter to Jesus. How exciting! Andrew experienced his first of many spiritual harvests.

I wonder if we have that same excitement. Every day we meet Jesus. Do we ever bring someone else with us? Any one of us can do what Andrew did. We seek the truth and find it. After we find it, we think of those we love who are in need of the very same truth, and we can bring them to meet Jesus. Maybe these people are in our home or neighborhood, our Sunday School class or in the same place where we worship, or (you fill in the blank). The question I want to leave you with is this: Who is the person you love so much that you must bring him/her to meet Jesus?

Yes, it’s exciting to be part of a harvest that consists of our very own fruit as well as the fruit others produce. Andrew’s invitation was simple: “Peter, come and meet my new friend; he’s the Messiah!” We know the rest of the rest: Peter met Jesus and his life was changed. How exciting!

Prayer: Lord of the harvest, we rejoice in the bountiful physical harvest You provide. We know You have commissioned us to produce a plentiful spiritual harvest. May we be inviting people who love others so much that we are compelled to bring them to meet You. Amen.
