Getting It Right

"By the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I; but the grace of God that was with me." - 1 Corinthians 15:10

For years I have noticed the uncanny coincidences that I am convinced are stories of grace.

Recently, I read an article by Marilyn McEntyre, professor of literature at Westmont College–California who commented, “I have come to believe everyone of us might trace a trail from gift to gift as we look back. Like crumbs on a path, they lead us toward the source of all abundance. It takes only a simple question to evoke these stories: ‘At what points did a door open for you unexpectedly?’”

Two years ago, a man came to work at my office. He is a graphic designer for promotion materials that I write. I was concerned because he had never served at an organization like ours before. As the weeks went by he seemed to function as if he had always been a part of us. One day he reported that his father was in a hospital in New England. “Where?,” I asked. He told me and I was dumbfounded, for I had been born in that same hospital many years ago.

Sometime later he said he had been born on Feb. 22, 1958—the same day and year as my son! I began to listen more closely to his comments about my work and our task together. Today, materials we produce are 10 times better than three years ago. Together we are able to help more people understand and support the charitable work we do. Truly, he is a gift provided by the grace of God.

Prayer: Creator God, help us to understand that everything we have and are and hope to be is saturated by grace, the continuous outflowing of your love.
