The Sting of Death
“O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”
–I Corinthians 15:55
When I was a small girl, I was terrified of death and afraid to die. I knew God and I believed I’d go to heaven but “getting my wings” and playing a harp for eternity had no appeal to this little girl. I couldn’t imagine anything more B-O-R-I-N-G!!! I used to cry for hours and plead to God not to let me die.
Fortunately, I grew out of that fear and into a deeper understanding that death is a painful reality here on earth but it really only hurts the ones left behind. For the born-again believer, death just means that his or her earthly body is instantly transformed into a heavenly body that will never again have to die.
Satan won a victory in the Garden of Eden by stinging and spiritually killing Adam and Eve with his lies and deception. His venom and poisonous stings effectively stopped Adam and Eve from living the spiritual life that God had intended for them to have with Him.
God had an anti-venom serum, though. It was Jesus’ blood shed on the cross. While Satan was gleefully watching Jesus die in agony, God and all His angels could hardly contain themselves for what was coming. The sting of death was completely and wholly swallowed up in the Resurrection of Jesus!! Wouldn’t it have been fun to have been in heaven on THAT day?!?!
Death for a Christian is nothing to be feared. It is just the next step toward eternal life with Jesus.
Prayer: Father, thank you for taking away the sting and fear of death. Help us come to a fuller knowledge of your work on the cross and the victory you gave the world three days later after Jesus’ resurrection. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
